Why did Mary just sit there?

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. John 11:20
I’ve been studying this verse for a couple of weeks. After Lazarus died Jesus went to his tomb. When Jesus arrived, Martha ran to Him first, but Mary sat in the house. Why did Mary just sit there?
Sometimes Martha and Mary’s relationship reminds me of John and Peter. They were overly concerned about what the other person was doing.
In the past, Martha had been angry with Mary because she wouldn’t do anything, but sit at the feet of Jesus. Mary knew Jesus was the Son of God. Mary would sit and listen to Him speak for hours. Mary reminds me of John the beloved. They were both soft hearted souls.
The whole purpose for Jesus coming to Lazarus’ tomb was to show them, and us, that He is the Resurrection and The Life. No one can come to the Father except through Him.
Jesus knew that His time on earth was coming to an end. In the near future, John and Peter would find themselves racing to the empty tomb of Jesus. It is written, So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. John 20:4
When a person is reaching the end of their journey they can quickly look over their life and remember those that truly loved them compared to those that mocked them. Any minister can see a real heart.
The day that Jesus stood at Lazarus tomb something else happened. Mary came and she fell down at Jesus feet. She totally collapsed. A complete surrender of her mind, body and spirit. That is true love and that is true worship. God is love and Christ was always moved by compassion.
And poor Lazarus, he had already conquered death. He had made it to the other side. And Jesus, being moved by love and compassion, brought Lazarus back. I can’t imagine the disappointment of Lazarus being brought back from the grave.
The reality is that we all have to face death. No one can escape it. But we should not fear death. Life is a vapor. It comes and goes quickly.
When Jesus hung on the cross he looked down and saw John the beloved with His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Again Jesus was moved by compassion. It is written, Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. John 19:20
After that, Jesus knew that all things had been accomplished. It was finished.
